[WM5] Re: Using storage card for ROM

I haven't heard of that. I do know that you can copy ROM files to RAM
(2gb storage card), but the reverse is not true except when you flash
the ROM with a new image. ROM stands for Read Only Memory and is as
important as your BIOS on your desktop/notebook computer. You can
also flash the ROM (I just did that on my device) a limited number of
times.

Here is what I do to prevent "not enough storage space" issues...

Setting up my phone I put what I call core applications on the WM5
device, that way I can use those applications with any card that may
be inserted.

All multi-media players:
+Flash Lite / Flash 7
+TCPMP
+Adobe Acrobat Reader
+MP3 player
+Real Player

Other important applications you can't live without should also bge
installed on the device, for me it is:
+Google Maps
+Assorted Weather Applications
+MS Live Search
+MS Portrait / IM programs
+Contacts Manager, etc.

The rest of it (lesser used applications and games) I place on SD cards.

One card is dedicated to videos & MP3's (converted from recorded TV or
other sources), depending on quality 2GB cards can easily be filled in
short order with a typical one hour show at a third of a gigabyte (SD
broadcast quality).

One card for all other applications, normally leave this one in full
time except when I want to watch a TV show or listen to music that
isn't on this card. Usually this card has enough room for one or two
episodes and a dozen albums in addition to all of the programs I
normally use.

Even though software companies tell you you cannot install on the SD
card, you can, it may load a little slower on WM5 devices, but once
running will behave the same. Use this for programs that you don't
use on a daily basis.

Any program that is used twice a week or less gets installed on the SD
card, programs in-between I install on the device depenind on the size
(indicated by the installation routine prior to installation).
Anything that hasn't been used in two months or can be done better by
another program gets removed and won't be installed again. Every half
year I make a list of programs I use regularly, do a HARD reset
(depressing the soft-reset button while depressing the power button at
the same time) and just install the applications I use on a regular basis.

Also if you write over ROM, you can no longer do a HARD reset to
restore your device should you need to as running out of space usually
an early indicator that you might have to do this. After trying out
a bunch of applications, I do a hard reset and a clean install, makes
the device run like new again. You are asking for disaster if you
replace the ROM with RAM since you will no longer be able to do a HARD
reset.

On my device MS IE consumes the most storage with its cache files.
Delete the cache files, this can typically chew up more than 10 MB on
your device. If you have never cleared the cache, it may take up to
ten minutes for it to delete all of the temporary files. You may want
to delete other temporary files as well (remove/backup any cab's that
you have installed off the device, move any photos to the storage
card). Basically just keep the most important programs and data files
on your device, and store all other programs and data on the SD card(s).

If you are really hard up for space after following these basic
guidelines, there is a compression program that will compress the
applications on your device (RAM portion) to save more storage space.
I believe it is called UPX where it will compress both EXE and DLL's.
You can rename some other larger files to dll's compress them and
rename them back with their original extensions (this may or may not
work depending on the file)

Easiest (slowest) and most user friendly version used directly on PPC:
http://mobile-sg.com/software/mobile.asp?p=UPX4PPC

Geekish command line version (faster but a lot more complicated and
must be run on your PC (DOS Prompt in Windows or UNIX console))
DOS/UNIX version: http://upx.sourceforge.net/

1. copy files from device to pc
2. compress on pc
3. create back-ups from device
4. copy compressed files from pc back to device
5. test and make sure they work correctly

You will need to test each application that you compress for
compatibility -- this can save you up to 50% in space, but typically
30%. Kind of like having a compressed volume on your hard drive, some
files will compress more than others.

This program is freeware.

Hope these tips help.
